WHO WE ARE

Roving Sommelier Drinks & Deli is the culmination and realisation of award-winning sommelier Robert Giorgione’s dream. @rovingsommelier is also the facilitator of liquid enjoyment.

We are a drinks retail shop and deli in Newport city centre. Located in the prestigious Newport Market & Food Court on High Street in the centre of Newport, South Wales, Roving Sommelier Drinks & Deli is your one-stop shop for all your food and drink needs. Stocking a fabulous range of affordable premium epicurean treats and authentic drinks.

Curated by award-winning sommelier, Robert Giorgione, Roving Sommelier Drinks & Deli will offer a bespoke customer service, tailored to your needs, tastes and budget, and will assist you in making some wonderful discoveries, too. It is our intention to help you gain confidence in tasting and appreciating a diverse selection of beverages and deli items, whether they are iconic ‘classics’, or from current ‘up-and-coming’ modern innovations from around the world. Treasure trove artisan deli, @rovingsommelier will have the right drink for you to suit every occasion and hopes to make food and drink matching more accessible. Our aim is to also champion local vineyards, wineries, and small-batch distillers, as well as top-notch, local artisan food producers. BACKGROUND

Top notch food and drink is in award winning sommelier, Robert Giorgione’s DNA. Having worked in the hospitality and food and drink retail industry since the age of 14, starting as a commis chef at his parents’ restaurant in Bristol, where wine became his hobby. After his studies at Sheffield City Polytechnic and at catering college in Bristol, he then gained five years of experience working for a UK national hotel chain. From 1996, Robert Giorgione’s 17 years of experience working for some of the best restaurants and retailers in London, including seven years with Harvey Nichols, at both Oxo Tower Restaurant and Fifth Floor in Knightsbridge, three years as head sommelier at iconic three Michelin-starred La Tante Claire (chef/patron Pierre Koffmann), and three years as wine buyer and head sommelier at Orrery in Marylebone (D & D London), is second to none. Now relocated to beautiful South Wales, and after 12 years in the making, Robert is very pleased to be opening such a wonderful opportunity here at Newport Market & Food Court. The journey has been interesting, sometimes challenging, but with many years of knowledge, passion, energy, and expertise as a sommelier and food and drink specialist his dream is finally becoming a reality. WHAT WE DO

As you can appreciate, being a high-end drinks specialist, @rovingsommelier hasn’t just chosen the run-of-the-mill or cheap and cheerful foodstuffs. Instead, we stock delicious snacks and tasty morsels, including delicious artisan cheeses, charcuterie, and accompaniments, that would perfectly partner a glass of wine, craft beer, herbal tea, kombucha, cup of coffee, or non-alcoholic drink. What’s more, when you’re in the mood to celebrate during the festive season, we will also offer mouth-watering sweet treats and indulgent chocolates, (all from artisan producers, naturally).

We are extremely proud of our selection and hope that you will enjoy them, too. In addition, we have also decided to showcase and champion many local, artisan Welsh and English producers (wherever possible), so that our customers can get to enjoy and support locally sourced ingredients and condiments from award-winning farms and food producers. We have also sourced top-notch olives, vinegars, honey, sauces, and relishes, and more besides from some of the best artisan producers in Spain and Italy, and elsewhere. As with our extensive drink selection, provenance, and quality of each of our well-chosen, delicatessen food products are key factors that we take very seriously.

Roving Sommelier Drinks & Deli will also host product tastings and seasonal food and drink masterclasses throughout the year. Whether you are an experienced wine connoisseur or complete novice (but love interesting drinks, naturally), not only will this be a wonderful opportunity for you to sample new products or vintages, but also to learn something new, too. Wine and other drinks do not have to be so intimidating, where it can be a lot of fun, as well!
